Day 57: Amsterdam Airport

Sorry, guys, didn't take any pictures today... but I'll see what I can do about telling our story using pictures found on the internets!

Well, we got on our flight just fine and on time… even if our plane wasn’t. The flight was a little uncomfortable this time around, so we were happy when we landed in Schiphol. We couldn’t help feeling like we were back home again. The language was familiar, and we could read all of the signs again! It was nice being in familiar surroundings again, even if it was the airport.

We picked up our luggage and headed to the good old Starbucks for coffee. Unfortunately, they had run out of hot water (what?!) so we were disappointed by cappuccinos instead. Look how disappointed Rob and I look in the photo! Rob spent some time writing his final paper for the penultimate class of his MBA career (that means second-to-last) and I wrote some blog stuff.

Our flight to Istanbul was scheduled to board at 3:30pm so we had some major time to kill. We signed in and checked our luggage at around 12:30 and then grabbed some groceries at the store for a picnic lunch. It's surprising how nice the courtyard outside of the airport is. It's very open and there are places to sit everywhere. We saw people sun bathing and napping by the water fountain... you know you couldn't do that at Pearson! At the airport. Then we Waited around for boarding only to discover that the flight was being delayed until 6:20PM. Bascially, we spent the entire day at Schiphol Airport and managed to entertain ourselves by counting the bathrooms (there is a washroom around every corner in this airport!), listening to the announcements that Mr. or Mrs. Someone-or-Other was holding up a flight by not being on time for boarding and that they would be off-loading their luggage if they didn’t hurry up (We couldn’t believe that someone every ten minutes was holding up a flight… no wonder planes are always delayed!). We also checked out the Airport branch of the Rijksmuseum, which was a pretty cool little exhibit on Dutch painters, and, more specifically, cows. Oh, and chocolate-covered stroop waffles are truly a gift from God

I guess it’s a good sign for a couple to be able to spend a mindless day at the airport and still want to hang out.

We made it on the flight and flew the 3 hours it took to get to Istanbul, and managed to find our non-English speaking driver to take us to our new home for 9 days. It’s awesome, no pictures, sorry, but look forward to the next post!
